Cambria/DouglassCambria/Douglass

The Cambria by Donal O'Kelly
Featuring Donal O'Kelly and Sorcha Fox

Roger Guenever SmithFrederick Douglass Now
Written and performed by Roger Guenveur Smith

Performed in rotating repertory in association with Classical Theatre of Harlem

Performances begin September 16th.

Tue-Fri 8 pm | Sat 2 pm & 8 pm | Sun 3pm & 7 pm
Marathon Performances (both plays performed) Saturday and Sunday

Frederick Douglass is one of the great iconic figures in American history. A confidante (and critic) of Lincoln, forerunner to Obama, abolitionist, women's suffragist, editor, orator, author, statesman and reformer. Forced to flee the United States after publishing his life story, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, he sought refuge in Ireland.

The Irish Arts Center proudly presents Cambria/Douglass, a theatrical event comprised of two great plays that illuminate the Douglass story for our time.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW, written and performed by Roger Guenveur Smith, illuminates today’s America with Douglass’s prescient 19th century writing, bringing to life the speeches, letters and editorials of the pioneering abolitionist and feminist with original narratives, fusing Douglass’ era with our own.  Smith's nationally acclaimed solo performance, most recently presented at the Kennedy Center, returns to New York after sold-out engagements at Aaron Davis Hall and La Mama, where it was originally commissioned.

Smith’s play will be presented in rotating repertory with THE CAMBRIA, Donal O’ Kelly’s groundbreaking play about Douglass’s historic voyage to Ireland. With false papers—and a bounty on his head from enraged slaveholders—he boarded the Cunard Line paddle-steamer The Cambria out of Boston bound for Ireland where he was greeted like a hero by the Irish people.  O’Kelly thrills with the story of how Douglass’ identity was revealed  aboard The Cambria—placing his life in danger—and how he survived to become what Abraham Lincoln called "the most impressive man I ever met.”

A Tribute to the Irish and Jewish Influences on Vaudeville and Early Tin Pan Alley

New York City’s Tin Pan Alley is known for the music of Berlin, Joplin, Waller, Cohan and others.  What is not as commonly known is that Irish favorites such as "Sweet Rosie O'Grady", "My Wild Irish Rose", and “’Twas Only an Irishman’s Dream” also emerged from this vibrant musical tradition.  For one very special evening, If It Wasn't For the Irish and the Jews celebrates the historic links between the Irish and Jewish people and their contributions to this important chapter in American musical history at the 760-seat theatre at the Peter Norton Symphony Space

This all-star concert event coincides with the launch of Moloney’s new album If It Wasn’t For the Irish and the Jews available on Compass Records this Fall.
