Internship Opportunities

Irish Arts Center (IAC) offers unpaid internships in Programming/Production, New Media, Development and Marketing. The scope and schedule for internships is determined by the individual department. Internships usually coincide with the school season (Fall, Spring and Summer) and typically last 4-5 months but an internship can extend up to a year. We usually ask for a time commitment of 1-2 days per week during regular business hours of 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Development Intern

This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in fundraising, in a fun and friendly environment. The Development Intern will report to the Director of Development and work very closely with the Development Associate. Duties will include assisting with data maintenance; correspondence; mailings; conducting research on individuals, foundations, and corporations; other special projects (such as working on grant proposals); events; and general administrative duties.

A bachelor's degree and a strong interest in arts administration are preferred. The individual must have strong computer, organizational, research, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel are required.

Marketing and Research Intern

The Irish Arts Center is seeking a creative, detail-oriented Marketing Intern with great follow through skills and a desire to join our fast paced team. The Marketing Intern provides assistance for the implementation of all marketing activities at the Irish Arts Center across a multidisciplinary event programming schedule, including publicizing and follow up on all IAC events through advertising, postcards, brochures, fliers, press releases, audience development, special promotions, social networking and the IAC website. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience, in a fun and friendly environment in each of the disciplines encompassed in the IAC's programming (theatre, visual arts, music, dance, film, literary events, comedy, and cultural education). We are looking for interns who are interested in helping us strengthen our reach through new and traditional marketing channels, while working closely with the event production teams.

Activities and responsibilities include:

1. Marketing, Press and Research -New media marketing (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Podcasts, etc)
-Assist in design of marketing materials, including postcards, fliers, brochures, and new media design
-Organization of grass roots marketing outreach (expanding audiences, developing new partnerships with like-minded organizations)
-Brand management (ensuring that visual & verbal messages are consistent across all materials) -Customer relations & feedback (surveys, analysis)
-Marketing/Prospect Research
-Assist in organization of press packets by discipline
-Assist in organization of all new press materials, including scanning and documentation

2. General Events
-Provide some on-site support for events and openings
-Organize literature for display

3. Administration
-Answer phones
-Assist with mailings
-Data entry (Sage)

Qualifications

-Excellent verbal and written communication skills -Demonstrated research and organizational skills -Ability to work independently and take direction from several members of a team -Ability to work on multiple projects and prioritize in a fast-paced environment -Ability to be detail-oriented while also grasping the big picture -Experience with / interest in new media marketing -Focus on efficiency, developing time-saving processes -Familiarity with a range of computer programs, including the Microsoft Office suite -Experience with CS3 Photoshop a plus -General knowledge of Irish and Irish American history and culture desirable, but not required.

New Media Intern

IAC seeks an online and social media fluent intern to assist with all aspects of IAC's online content creation and dissemination (podcast, video, blog, photo sharing, etc), supporting a diverse cultural program.  In this position the intern will help develop, edit and publish content for the Live from Irish Arts Center media section of the Irish Arts Center website, and for the soon-to-be launched blog. The intern will gain firsthand experience working in a nonprofit performing arts organization and will have an opportunity to hone audio and video editing skills, project management skills, writing skills, and narrative creation skills, while making a huge impact on the organization’s community presence both in New York and internationally.

This is a valuable opportunity for someone interested in working in the arts, and creating a portfolio of video and audio representing all of Irish Arts Center’s disciplines (theatre, music, visual arts, dance, film, literature, comedy, education).

Reporting to both Director of Programming and Director of Communications and working with Programming and Marketing Associates the NMI will be responsible for:

-Creating, recording, editing, posting and sharing podcasts (both audio and video)
-Creating, designing, content-generating, sharing etc a new IAC blog
-Working with Marketing team to create, share, cross-platform and promote social media via -Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Tumblr, Flickr
-Keep on top of and keep IAC staff abreast of developments in new media
-Other admin tasks (reception work, database entry and management)

Qualifications
Candidates should have an interest in arts and culture and media and ideally have a working knowledge of the New York City cultural community and the not-for-profit field.  Intern must be motivated to work quickly and independently and possess some knowledge of audio editing.

• Excellent writing skills, particularly the ability to synthesize and summarize accurately and pay attention to details of grammar and spelling and adherence to house-style
• Demonstrated research and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently or take direction from several members of a team, as needed.
• Familiarity with a range of computer programs, including the Microsoft Office suite, Photoshop, Adobe, and Audacity or other audio editing software
• Experience or interest in creating consistent and high quality podcast content
• Great oral skill / ability to speak with different types of people on a project (artists, technical crew, creative team, marketing, donors, etc).
• General knowledge of Irish and Irish American history and culture desirable, but not required.
• Fluent in and on and have accounts on a wide range of social media including Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, Flickr, Tumblr

Program and Production Intern

Available immediately. Irish Arts Center seeks an intern to assist with all aspects of its cultural programming. In this position the intern will develop the practical skills required to work in a nonprofit performing arts organization, and will have a chance to explore and work on all aspects of event planning, production and execution. Interns gain experience in production management, technical theater operations, artist management and hospitality, cross cultural organization partnerships, local government partnerships, arts in education and more. The intern will be actively engaged in the planning and implementation of performances and events in each of the disciplines encompassed in the IAC's activities (theatre, music, visual arts, dance, film, literature, comedy). This is a valuable opportunity for someone interested in working in the arts. Tasks will be assigned in the following areas:

1. Performances & Exhibitions

  • provide production support to Program team in execution of all multi-discipline events
  • organize, read and discuss incoming submissions
  • conduct preliminary artist research (contact info, CVs, basic background)
  • assist in installation/deinstallation of exhibitions
  • assist with after performance event planning, donor receptions, and member special events and parties
  • provide tours of gallery

2. General Events

  • provide on-site support for educational festivals (Open Day, Irish Language Day, Dance Festival) and donor events
  • assist with merchandise organization & sales

3. Press & Marketing

  • assist in organization of press packets by discipline
  • prepare materials for distribution to publicist
  • organize and distribute photos to press outlets

4. Administration

  • answer phones
  • assist with mailings
  • data entry (Sage)
  • general office and administrative support

Qualifications

Compensation

This is an unpaid internship. University course credit is available and Irish Arts Center will work with the individual intern to provide all necessary documentation. We ask that interns commit to a minimum of 2 days per week during regular business hours (10:00 am to 6:00 pm). However, depending upon the individual candidate and circumstances, there may be some flexibility with regard to the time commitment. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

Internships are generally in the Fall (September through end of December) Spring (January through June) and Summer (June/July through late August/early September).

Special Projects Intern

Duties will include assisting with the Irish Arts Center Capital Campaign; data maintenance; correspondence; mailings; conducting research on individuals, foundations, and corporations; other special projects (such as working on grant proposals); events; and general administrative duties.

A bachelor's degree and a strong interest in arts administration are preferred. The individual must have strong computer, organizational, writing, research, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel are required.
